sorry it has taken a bit to write this one... great little eatery on Main. Used to be Augie's. People that run it are nice. the pierogies were good and so was the soup(farmer's cheese and mint, mushroom pierogies and califlower soup). they have a small tight menu. I picked these items for i'm a veggie. One issue which I'm not sure I'm being stupid but I long for the days of pierogies being nicely priced like Kiev and all those place in Little Ukraine in the city. I have not been there in sometime so I don't know what they are charging now but it was seven bucks for seven pierogies. Anyway it's seems to be set pricing in Beacon to charge that much for food so anyway it's is fresh and good.

New food market on Liberty street in Newburgh. Next to Washington's headquarters(one of a mil)
Up and coming part of the city that has an art supply store, coffee shop and a cheesecake place is coming too.
See what happens. The store is well designed and has nice vintage pieces but is a bit lacking in how much they carry. They carry local produce (had a nice apple selection) and have a deli area. Had a bit of a dean and deluca/gourmet garage feel. Have the tried and true Ronnybrook line but they have a chunk of things to can get anywhere. It's a good local down the block and the 'hood place. The owner is very nice and knowledgable. They did just open so let's see what happens. I do secretly wish they were in Beacon...

A great place to start if you are new to farms around Hudson Valley is going through tourism.

They do tours of some of the farms in the area and they are really aiming for the MTA-out of towners-DIA crowd but they are open to the"Locals".
Some of the farms are open to the public but a few are not except for tours.
I recently visited Fishkill Farms, Secor Farms and Shenandoah Dairy Farm.

Shenandoah is part of Hudson Valley Dairy which is a co op of dairy farmers. They sell their milk at Beacon Market and Adams. Just can see it on tours.

Secor Farms in Hopewell Junction is great for pick your own. Berries, peas depending on the season. The owner are very nice and you can be out on your own in the fields.
They are priced well.

Fishkill Farms also in Hopewell Junction has picking but I think they charge a bit more than Secor (someone told me) They have a great FDR history_ the owner was the Secretary of the US Treasury under Franklin D. Roosevelt and the farm was visited by FDR and Churchill.
They also have a CIA chef and the beginnings of an eatery which is still be worked on but you can get great quiche, donuts and homemade ice cream. There is an area where you can seat, eat and take in the view of the farm valley/orchards.

I plan on checking out some more farms in the next couple of weeks...
and longing for more eateries to open in town that are easy on the purse.
We shall see...

This place is the best. Steve the chef (mad scientist of ice cream) is really smart guy to come up with the flavors such as avocado, beet, roasted banana with saffron, mint cucumber...he's like willy wonka of ice cream. He and his wife run the shop and have a really nice vibe. Kid friendly dog friendly and new york city friendly. Took my city friends in & they went nuts.
The ice cream comes in pop form like the Mexican street Popsicles called paletas or there are some sandwiches like lemon thyme on the chocolate cookie or beet on a flax cookie. They sound weird but they don't taste it.
They also have sorbets and vegan ice cream.
The one bad thing but not really bad (cause they use local and seasonal items) is there limited runs on some like the mojito. They also have a double chocolate sandwich with valrhona chocolate now gone... so bring your cooler and stock up.

I love Beacon and food.
I am also in love with farming but I fear I am viewing farming thru cityfolk glasses.
With this blog I want to cover the local farming and food ever growing in the area and put some info out there for others to enjoy.
